A Loaded Eculid Water Truck Was Involved In A Potentially Serious Accident

A loaded Eculid Water Truck was involved in a potentially serious accident at a District 8 surface mine. The truck had partially traveled up a spoil ramp leading from the pit when the engine stalled. The truck lost all power assist steering functions and the engine retarder also became inoperable. This truck was not equipped with emergency steering. The operator quickly called on his radio for all persons and equipment to stay clear of the moving truck. As the truck rolled backwards down the ramp, the operator attempted to apply both the service brake and the park brake, however, neither would slow the truck. The truck continued to travel backward until it struck the toe of the spoil, located approximately 60 feet away. On impact, the load of water shifted to the left side of the truck, causing the truck to overturn. The operator was wearing his seatbelt, which prevented serious injury. He was treated at a nearby hospital for slight contusions and irritation of the right eye due to a particle of broken glass. The employee was released for work by the hospital the same day after receiving treatment
